Traveller’s tale: Salzburg and snowscapes

Stunning scenery, alpine team-building and heaps of culture makes Salzburg a great place for business travellers

Salzburg scenery

Austria’s city of culture has plenty to explore

When I set off to cultured Salzburg, I never imagined I would be learning how to survive an avalanche. But this UNESCO World Heritage city is just a 90-minute flight from Gatwick Airport, and its alpine valleys and mountains provide exciting team-building experiences!

Where to stay and meet

Located next to the dramatic Leopold Mountains, the hotel Mama Thresl is ideal for business travellers wanting to explore the slopes. A modern take on the alpine chalet, the hotel’s sleek wooden interiors are coupled with modern stone fixtures; indoor climbing walls tower beside the bar, and live music nights offer opportunities to unwind. Sports lovers should make the most of the GoPro cameras available to rent.

For larger groups of business travellers, the nearby Der Krallerhof and Hotel Gut Brandlhof offer extensive conference facilities. Off duty, you can take part in high-energy driving experiences, from off-road adventures to go-kart racing, on Hotel Gut Brandlhof’s adjoining test track.

Hitting the slopes

Not surprisingly, we took part in several winter activities, including a team-building avalanche rescue. Led by an alpine specialist group, we trekked up a mountain wearing snowshoes – they’re like tennis rackets on your feet – to find buried items.

I’m a keen skier, so I also enjoyed exploring the various slopes at Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn, one of the largest ski areas in Austria.

The slopes at Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang are a ski lover’s paradise

After a day on the mountains, it was great to tuck into some traditional Austrian food at Huwi’s Alm, a friendly restaurant in the mountain village of Priestrigg. We ate a delicious dish called ‘Hut Essen’, which involved us all cooking a piece of meat on an iron skillet – a good team-bonding experience!

While we tend to associate Salzburg with Mozart and The Sound of Music, this mountainous region has plenty to offer culture vultures and snow lovers alike.
